The Sydney Wedding Suit Guide

7 min readUpdated October 2026

Wedding tailoring is the one commission with a deadline that cannot move. Most of what goes wrong is scheduling, not cloth. Here is how to plan it.

Start three to four months out

Made to measure typically takes four to six weeks, bespoke eight to twelve. Booking three to four months ahead is not caution, it is the buffer that absorbs a delayed cloth order, a groomsman who drops two sizes, or a fitting that needs repeating.

If your date is closer than that, say so immediately. It is usually still possible, but the options narrow.

Coordinate, do not match

The group should look deliberate, not uniformed. The usual approach is one cloth across the groomsmen, with the groom set apart by a three-piece where they wear two, or by a different tie and boutonniere.

Identical suits on six men of different builds photograph worse than a coordinated group, not better.

Choose cloth for the season and the venue

A Sydney summer wedding in a heavy worsted is a mistake you make once. Linen, hopsack and high-twist tropical wool breathe. For a garden or beach ceremony, lighter colours photograph beautifully in bright sun.

Winter and evening weddings suit flannel, deeper tones and heavier cloths that hold their shape through a long day.

Interstate and overseas groomsmen

Plan around the hardest person to get in a room, not the easiest. Fittings can be clustered around travel, and we build the schedule backwards from the date.

The details worth having

A buttonhole that actually takes a flower. Matching linings across the party. The date and initials embroidered inside the jacket.

These cost very little and are the things people notice in photographs years later.
